A Holistic Pathway for Children aged 8 - 12 years old

The years between early childhood and adolescence are a time of remarkable growth and transformation. Children aged 8 to 12 are blossoming into their individuality while seeking a sense of belonging. They crave independence but still need the security of trusted guides. With curiosity blooming and an emerging capacity for abstract thinking, they’re primed for exploration, creativity, and the co-creation of their world.

Rewild Margaret Rive weaves together 8 Shields principles, eco-psychology, Steiner/Waldorf education and Montessori methods to create a vibrant, nature-rooted approach for this age group. It’s designed to meet their developmental needs while fostering a sense of wonder, interconnectedness, and self-awareness.

The Developmental Needs of 8-12-Year-Olds

Children in this phase are navigating a rich, multifaceted journey:

  • Expanding Awareness
They’re stepping beyond their immediate family and beginning to see themselves in a broader context—socially, culturally, and even ecologically.

  • Cognitive Growth
Their minds are ripe for logic, reason, and abstract thought. They’re eager to solve puzzles, test hypotheses, and wrestle with "what if" scenarios. Yet, imagination and story remain crucial tools for engaging their intellect.

  • Emotional Resilience
This is a time of self-doubt and vulnerability as they begin to see the world’s imperfections (and their own). They need safe spaces to process emotions, build confidence, and practice empathy.

  • Connection to Nature and Community
They yearn for deeper connections—both to their peers and the natural world. A sense of belonging and purpose is essential for them to thrive.

Children at this age are on the brink of discovery—not just of the world, but of themselves. We as facilitators have the privilege of walking alongside them, not as taskmasters but as co-adventurers, ready to learn and laugh together.

Within our programs the question isn’t what will they learn today? but what might we discover together? It’s a journey filled with possibility, grounded in connection, and guided by the joy of growth.
